In early 2024, The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre started to offer programs and services in Collingwood to support residents across South Georgian Bay. Since that time, dozens of support groups have taken place and have been attended by over 50 individuals from Meaford to Wasaga Beach. Local cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers have accessed services including:

This year, to celebrate the launch of our new cancer support program location, we are introducing two new routes that start in Collingwood. These routes aim to help raise awareness and funds, with the goal of bringing more cancer support resources to South Georgian Bay. By registering for Cycle For Hope, and fundraising in Collingwood and the surrounding communities, you can give hope a home in South Georgian Bay and ensure that cancer support resources continue to grow and thrive in the community.

Route 1: 150KM

Leaving from Collingwood and cycling to the Celebration area where riders will receive their lunch and enjoy the camaraderie of other event participants, learn more about the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre, hear members’ stories, interact with our sponsors and participate in the draws; after lunch, riding back to Collingwood, completing the 150km route.

Route 2: 72KM

Leaving from Collingwood and cycling to the Celebration area where riders will receive their lunch and enjoy the camaraderie of other event participants, learn more about the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre, hear members’ stories, interact with our sponsors and participate in the draws. Multiple options exist for the trek back to Collingwood including pick up by family members who may be participating (other routes, volunteering, support) or returning via van/bus to the original starting point.

I lost my mother to Colon Cancer and I was diagnosed with an osteosarcoma on my right pelvic bone. When I was diagnosed I felt fear. Fear of dying and not being around to enjoy my grandkids who are so young… not being remembered by my grandchildren. Fear of all the treatments. I struggled with feeling alone, with daily pain, with feeling like an outsider and being labelled. Trying not to be bothered by people staring at you in pity because you limp so badly. Having a place where I don’t feel like an outsider has had such an impact. Connecting with others who truly understand what you feel, and who offer support and encouragement has been so important. You travel so much for treatment and appointments and surgeries that it is important to have support close to home. Thank you, Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre for the difference you make! You really give people Hope!

Lori Chatham — Collingwood, ON

Having been a cancer patient, I am acutely aware of the impact cancer has on an individual and family’s emotional, physical and financial well being. As a cancer survivor, I look back at how much I relied on the strength and resources of my family and friends in the absence of available Cancer Support Services in the Collingwood area during and after my treatments. I am honoured to be associated with the Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre because I know how vital these services are and how they will bring comfort and hope to anyone impacted by cancer in the Southern Georgian Bay area.
